Better to be safe than sorry. This is the best rule of thumb when it comes to flooding and auto insurance. During a season of heavy rains, unpredictable storms and rising lakes and rivers, you’ll want to make sure you’re covered in the event your car is damaged by floods.
Comprehensive coverage is the way to go
If you live in a high-risk flood zone, and even if you don’t, you should choose comprehensive coverage in your auto insurance policy. Remember, your auto insurance doesn’t automatically come with this coverage; you have to get it additionally. Think of comprehensive coverage as the type of coverage that doesn’t involve accidents with other vehicles. Comprehensive coverage protects you from acts of nature beyond your control, and if your car should get stolen. When you make a comprehensive coverage claim, you don’t have to worry about your insurance premiums going up the way they can after a collision coverage claim.
When to get comprehensive coverage
You should get it right from the start. For instance, if you live in a hurricane-prone area, and a hurricane is coming your way, you will likely be denied coverage if you want until a storm is forecasted. You should get the coverage right away just in case.
Imagine you’re driving down the road, and the road ahead suddenly becomes flooded. You’re unable to go any other way. For safety reasons, you may need to abandon your vehicle. If the road is still drivable, you might forge ahead, only to have your car damaged by flood water. You’ll need to pay your deductible, then be covered for repairs or if the car is a total loss.
When NOT to get comprehensive coverage
This is entirely up to you. Some people prefer the peace of mind of knowing their car is protected. However, if you drive a much older car and it costs less to replace it if it’s a total loss, you may consider dropping this type of coverage. Again, that’s your call.
What to know about flood claims
When it comes to flood claims, the sooner you call the better. You should alert your insurance company right after a catastrophic event has occurred. This accomplishes two things: first, your claim will be processed much sooner. Second, insurance companies are more likely to cover you in the event of something sudden. If too much time has passed, you could be suspected of basic neglect, which is never covered.
What to do about the damage to your car
You should have professionals dry out your car as soon as possible. This will reduce the risk of a total loss. Make sure you take your car to your insurance company’s preferred repair shop.
